Styx: Master of Shadows interview with Camille Lisoir


Pure|News had recently the chance to talk with Camille Lisoi, Marketing Project Manager at Cyanide about the upcoming game stealth game Styx: Master of Shadows .

Either you haven’t heard about the game before or even if  you’re familiar with it, this interview will give you a glimpse upon the development of the game a bit more information about both it’s gameplay and storyline.

Let’s begin shall we?

Pure|News Question :  Can you tell us what is Styx: Master of Shadows all about?

Answer: The game is centered around Styx, a goblin master assassin who is two centuries old. He wants to steal the heart of the World Tree: the source of the amber, immense power and fabulous riches, but that could also be the explanation of his origin. To reach this objective, he’ll have to cross the immense Tower of Akenash, protected by many of his enemies: humans, elves, orcs, and even more…
With the gameplay, our aim was to go back to the roots of the stealth genre

Pure|News Question : Few are the games that have the main character as a Goblin, why did you choose Styx to be a Goblin?

Answer:As fans of the stealth genre, we felt that recent iterations of well known stealth licenses were too action-oriented and were missing the ingredients that make a good stealth game, such as tension, observation or exploration. Choosing a goblin as the hero is the best way to make the player understand that a head-on attack is not likely to bring success. Some may consider Styx as fragile, but in fact he is resourceful thanks to his agility, assassin skills and magical powers. You will have to plan your actions; it’s what a stealth game is all about.


Pure|News Question : How is the stealth gameplay? Can we complete the game without killing anyone and just stunning with take downs?

Answer: You really have to be aware of the many details in a level to progress. For example, sound and light are always taken into account. If you drop an object on the floor by mistake, the sound will help your enemies to spot you. You have to be careful and attentive, you cannot rush headlong into the fray; or you won’t survive for long!

We want to offer a real challenge to the player, with a game requiring strategy and thought. But to make the things fair, you’ll have powerful tools at your disposal that you’ll have to use wisely.

You can go through the entire game without killing anyone, except if one of your missions is precisely to kill someone. It is even better to avoid killing your opponents, because you’ll gain more experience.

Pure|News Question : What type of weapons and equipment Styx has at he’s disposal? How are the RPG elements in the game?

Answer: Yes, Styx has a lot of means at his disposal to help himself to achieve his missions.

He can use some lethal weapons, like knives, but also potions and other objects. And he can also use special powers, like making a clone of himself to outwit the enemy for example. These great powers are not free of course, so you’ll have to use them at the right time.

At the beginning, Styx has three basic skills to help him achieve his missions with discretion. And as Styx gains experience, he can improve a skill, unlock new moves or weapons, and make his choice between six talent trees.

Pure|News Question : How open is the world of the game?

Answer: There is not just one path to follow, but a lot of different solutions. The game is made of open corridors and, as you’re a small creature, there are some routes that are only available for you.

Styx can use secret passages, climb the walls, walk under roofs, etc. The verticality of the levels is very important and you’ll find a lot of different ways to go just by looking around you. You are therefore free to choose the best way to proceed, but be careful; the most obvious paths are not always the safest.

Pure|News Question : Can you give us any details about the art style of the game?

Answer: The art style is realist with some cartoon touches. The universe is inspired by our previous game Of Orcs and Men, so you’ll find the same dark and mature atmosphere. Among our sources of inspirations, we can mention Escher and da Vinci.

Pure|News Question : Could you talk about the technology used on the game? Which Engine and what does it allow you to do?

Answer: The game was made with Unreal Engine 3, and we tried to use it to its maximum. It contains a very powerful level creation tool, allowing us to generate unique situations for each levels.

Pure|News Question :  When can we expect the game to be released? Any possible chance of seeing it in the next generation consoles?

Answer: The game will be released this autumn, and it will be available to download on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
